Euro Road Trip 2013

We’re back from our summer holiday, although some might not include 2015 miles in the car with the kids as a holiday.

It was great.

We got the sleeper car-train from s’ Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands to Livorno in Italy. We had a third-class six-berth compartment for the 20-hour journey. Third-class means no air-conditioning, so all the compartments in our carriage kept the doors open, and the kids circulated and explored.  We had dinner in the dining car on the banks of the Rhine, and went past the Lorelei rock and statue between main course and dessert.

We stayed in a villa outside Lucca for the first week, with the Silcocks.  We hooked up for a very wet day in Lucca with Griff & Clare, their kids, and Griff’s parents.

We saw a fair amount of Tuscany – Pisa, Siena, the beaches, hill towns and countryside…

After the week in the villa we headed north to Lake Maggiore for a weekend with Pip’s Mum & Dad, Gin, Lucy, Pete, Charlotte, and Pip’s Uncle John from Bolivia.

From then on we had a week or so to get back to London, and we had the tent and the kayak in the back of the car.  The first stop was through the Mont Blanc tunnel to a campsite near Chamonix for a few nights. We took some cable cars up to an Alpine meadow for a walk, and would have spent another night there if the weather hadn’t broken.

From there, in a failed attempt to escape the rain, we drove up to the Jura region for the Herrison falls.  We stayed in a hotel to dry out that night, went to a Comte cheese dairy the next morning to stock up, and spent a few hours in Chateau Challon.

From there we drove across to Noyers Sur Sereine for two nights on the tiny, basic, and brilliant municipal campsite (€1.65 a night!), and spent the days kayaking on the river and in the patisserie.

The final night was in Sezanne in Champagne, before the usual mad dash and missed Channel Tunnel.
